 Artist Statement

I’ve always felt the call to art – my quiet compass through life’s contradictions. Painting is how I explore and connect with something larger than myself, guided not by certainty, but by what feels true.

Drawn to the spaces between the physical and spiritual, I work intuitively, letting curiosity lead. I experiment freely with various materials and techniques to give form to the images that arise in my mind’s eye.

Each painting offers a glimpse into that inner world—a reflection of mystery, movement, and meaning manifested through the act of creating.

Artist Biography

Thomas Stewart Robertson was born in June 1956 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is currently based in Brantford, Ontario. A visual artist and painter, Robertson is known for his multi-style approach, combining contemporary realism, surreal abstraction, portraiture, and landscape. Working in oils, acrylics, and mixed media, he incorporates fine blending, impasto, and three-dimensional elements using non-traditional materials to achieve striking textures and vibrant colour. He is widely recognized for the luminous, expressive quality of his work across both realistic and surreal genres.

Robertson’s art is driven by a deep exploration of the spiritual undercurrents within everyday life, often reflecting the unseen emotional and metaphysical forces that shape human experience. His practice is distinguished by technical versatility and a vivid imagination. Notable series include surreal representations of music and musicians, semi-abstracted nature scenes, emotionally charged lifestyle imagery, and refined portraiture. His lifelong commitment to creativity has been shaped by early mentorship, personal perseverance, and an unrelenting passion for visual expression.

Thomas Stewart Robertson began his professional journey at Gould Outdoor Advertising in 1973 under the mentorship of renowned illustrator Louis Crowe, following the encouragement of his high school art teacher, Gary Woodward. In 2000, he transitioned from commercial work to focus fully on his independent artistic practice. His work has been exhibited in various settings and is held in both private and public collections globally.
